There’s no more picking, squeezing, or popping zits thanks to the rising popularity of pore vacuuming, the use of a device to clean out pores. These TikTok-famous devices claim to extract the dirt, debris, and sebum that can clog pores and cause blackheads. Different pore vacuums come with different bells and whistles such as magnifying glasses, steamers, spinning crystal heads to exfoliate skin and/or multiple tips.

They sound highly appealing, but it’s user beware when it comes to pore vacuums and pore vacuuming, cautions Jeanine B. Downie, MD, FAAD, director of image Dermatology PC in Montclair, NJ.

The risks of pore vacuuming likely outweigh any potential benefits, she says. “It can cause a flare of rosacea, acne, or eczema,” she explains. If a patient goes too heavy on the suction, bruising and telangiectases can occur. “Other risks may include infection, scarring, pore hypertrophy, and total inflammation of the skin.”

The bottom line? If a patient is concerned about their pores, there is no substitute for extraction under sterile conditions by a board-certified dermatologist.

Mulberry Silk Pillowcase, DefenAge

DefenAge is marketing the Mulberry Silk Pillowcase as a treatment complement to its product line, creating “a silk pillowcase skincare regimen.” The company says this symbiotic sales relationship delivers retail success by drawing clients who are already DefenAge product users to the pillowcase and introducing silk pillowcase believers to the brand. Silk is thught to help to retain skin moisture, prevent the skin from stretching and tugging, which can contribute to wrinkles, and prevent hair damage seen with standard pillow fabrics.
