Survey: Dermatologists Remain Top Influencers in Cosmetic Procedure Decisions

Dermatologists continue to lead as the primary influencers in patients’ decisions regarding cosmetic procedures, according to the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery’s (ASDS) 2025 Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures. The annual survey, which collected responses from more than 3,500 consumers nationwide, found that 7 out of 10 respondents are considering a cosmetic procedure, with dermatologists cited as the preferred providers due to their expertise and clinical outcomes.1
“Dermatologists are the physician of choice in 12 procedure categories and receive 95% or higher overall patient satisfaction in 8 of 15 treatments,” said ASDS President M. Laurin Council, MD, MBA.
The survey identified confidence, appearing youthful, attractiveness, and self-reward as the leading motivations for pursuing aesthetic treatments, particularly among adults aged 25 to 54. Common concerns included excess body weight (85% of respondents), skin texture or discoloration (78% of respondents), periorbital wrinkles (78% of respondents), and submental fat (77% of respondents). Mid-face wrinkles emerged as a new top concern in 2025 (73% of respondents).
Minimally invasive procedures such as injectable treatments, chemical peels, and laser hair removal remain among the most popular. Men reported greater concern about facial redness and uneven skin tone than women (43% vs 35%).
Despite this interest, cost was the No. 1 concern, followed by safety and side effects, and fear of pain. Safety concerns were reported more frequently among respondents in the Northeast, correlating with heightened media coverage of adverse events.
The findings reinforce dermatologists’ central role in cosmetic decision-making and highlight the need for continued patient education regarding provider expertise and safety standards. “Patients are looking for trusted, qualified physicians, and dermatologists are well-positioned to meet that need,” Dr. Council said.
