New in My Practice: Devices

In each edition, Modern Aesthetics asks top aesthetic physicians about the newest devices in their practices. This month, Mitchel P. Goldman, MD talks about the ResurFX Module for the M22 from Lumenis.

What is the ResurFX module?

ResurFX is a 1565nm fiber laser module added on to the M22 device from Lumenis that enables, “fractional nonablative resurfacing in what I call a true fashion,” says Dr. Goldman. “We now have an integrated scanner that allows the operator to set the density he or she wants without having to use multiple passes.”

Treating with a higher density in a single pass seems to allow for more rapid healing post-treatment, Dr. Goldman says. Although there have not been any side-by-side comparison studies, he does not believe that the single pass treatment will have any reduced efficacy compared to multiple passes.

How will ResurFX fit into your practice?

Dr. Goldman, who has used the M22 in his office for many years, says the new ResurFX module will increase the speed and efficiency of treatment by allowing him to treat more indications with the same device. For example, he says, patients can be treated with IPL first and then be treated with the ResurFX module to address scars or deeper wrinkles. “For what I call a ‘Five-Star Treatment,' I treat with low densities to the entire face and then treat areas of scarring or wrinkling by going up to a higher density and/or higher power over those areas,” Dr. Goldman explains.

What are main benefits of the ResurFX? Are there drawbacks?

Dr. Goldman notes that his experience with the ResurFX has primarily come from clinical trials, as the module only received FDA clearance a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, he says that he has seen no significant drawbacks.

In addition to being efficient and effective, the new module may offer costs savings for practices—and patients. Practices can target multiple common cosmetic concerns with a single device. Additionally, the system requires no consumables. “There are no disposables, so there are no costs associated with using the module,” Dr. Goldman says. “It's good when what you pay for is what you get.”
