75th Annual Meeting of the AAD

Nearly 9,900 medical personnel attended the 75th Annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) in Orlando. Modern Aesthetics® magazine's sister publication Practical Dermatology® and DermTube.com offered video coverage of the meetig, much of which focused on the latest advances in aesthetics.

Hosted by Joel L. Cohen, MD a dermatologist in Colorado, coverage included neuromodulator injection techniques, filler pearls, and a laser update, plus a look at what's new and in the pipeline for aesthetic interventions.

Modern Aesthetics® Co-chief Medical Editor Heidi Waldorf, MD discussed how effective placement of injectables in the temples can provide a significant aesthetic improvement in an area that is frequently neglected. However, safety is paramount, Dr. Waldorf says. “We all know there are risks to injections,” she says. “The best way to avoid them is to understand the anatomy.” Watch the full video where Dr. Waldorf outlines principles for proper treatment of the temple area that avoids major complications.

Dr. Cohen offers treatment tips for best, natural outcomes with neuromodulator injections. He also discusses how injecting toxins prior to resurfacing or prior to filler injections can improve results and duration of effects. “Sometimes when we're treating the glabella for volume, if we go ahead and pre-treat [patients] with a neuromodulator, we can get better duration of effect,” he says, describing a study that showed patients who were pre-treated with Botox in the glabella before filler saw about 32 weeks duration of effect compared to 18 weeks with filler alone.
