Laser resurfacing is one of the most popular treatments at most dermatology practices, and it is no different at my four offices in the New York City area, where we have a total of 12 board-certified dermatologists and we focus primarily on cosmetic procedures. There are always candidates who need resurfacing for acne scars, wrinkles, and various other indications.
I have used the Fraxel® DUAL non-ablative fractional laser (NAFL) system from Solta Medical since it first launched, and it has been an exceptional asset for my practice. It has been used in millions of treatments worldwide and has a demonstrated safety and efficacy profile. The Fraxel FTX® builds on that technology in a way that makes it easier for clinicians to use while providing the same trusted treatment for patients.
Some device manufacturers try to improve on really good technology and cause more problems in the process. With the Fraxel FTX, Solta Medical built on a trusted platform we all know and love, and introduced updates that make the system easier to use. They upgraded the handpiece so it is more ergonomic. They upgraded the way the tips are used. They upgraded the way the device tracks the energy. They upgraded the air delivery system so it is more focused on the patient. Everything they did consisted of minor upgrades that led to significant improvement in the overall delivery system from the physician’s perspective, while the patient gets the same energy, the same passes, and the same recovery time. Patients might even feel like it is a little bit faster or a little bit more comfortable, but in the end, it still just works really well.
A 2025 beta-testing survey of 22 clinicians (including myself) and 97 patients treated with the Fraxel FTX system suggested that it offers improved ergonomics, workflow efficiency, and patient comfort. The large majority of clinicians reported better cable bundling, better fatigue-reducing ergonomics, significantly faster switching between tips, and more convenience with the 7-mm tip. Patients, meanwhile, mostly rated the cooling effect as better than Fraxel DUAL and the healing process as comfortable; 91% reported satisfaction with the treatment experience, and 95% expressed overall satisfaction with treatment results.
I still use the Fraxel DUAL® in one of my offices and I still love it. Adding a new piece of technology to a practice is not always easy, but with Fraxel FTX delivering the familiar Fraxel experience with improved ease of use, I can feel confident integrating it into my workflow and continuing to provide a reliable experience for my patients.
5 REASONS TO BUY
The redesigned handpiece is an improvement. Ergonomically, it is smaller and lighter, so fatigue is reduced. Additionally, the cable bundling is cleaner.
The AccuTRAC optical tracking system for the Fast Tracking Experience (FTX) is better because the cooling comes directly through the tip and onto the patient to reduce fogging of the treatment tip.
The disposable 7- and 15-mm treatment tips reduce treatment time by eliminating the need to clean and reprocess tips. The risk of cross-contamination also is reduced. Additionally, the new style of tip is vented so the Zimmer Chiller can be run at a higher level.
The design maintains a small footprint in the office while also incorporating a more ergonomic user interface with a sleek, flat-screen monitor.
The device can be used on all skin types and can be used beyond just the face and neck, so it is literally versatile enough to use on almost any patient who walks in your office. The downtime is manageable and the treatments can be tailored to each patient’s goals. It can be combined with various other treatments at the discretion of the physician. All of those factors create a plethora of ways to achieve a strong return on investment.
