In each issue, Modern Aesthetics® magazine spotlights a new device that aesthetic physicians are introducing in their practice. Here, Alan Durkin, MD, a double board-certified plastic surgeon at Ocean Drive Plastic Surgery in Vero Beach, Florida, discusses The SaltFacial.

What is The SaltFacial, and how are you using it in practice?

Alan Durkin, MD: The SaltFacial is a clinical platform that combines three separate modalities into a single therapeutic session. It combines the elegance of an extraction facial with a comprehensive dermabrasion treatment and then offers low-level collagen induction therapy via LED laser. The SaltFacial is uniquely positioned in our practice for men and women who are starting an aesthetic journey or for patients who are happy with their current aesthetic but are looking to be “event fabulous.” It is also used routinely for skin maintenance because of its remarkable dermabrasion component.

What sets The SaltFacial apart from other in-office facials?

Dr. Durkin: The SaltFacial is a true branded facial, but unlike its competitors, it does not sacrifice the human component of facial care. Also, it is the only branded facial that combines dermabrasion with laser therapy. This combination makes the platform multifocal in how it treats the skin.

Who makes an ideal patient?

Dr. Durkin: The ideal patient is anyone who is willing to invest consistently in their skincare. Patients do best with The SaltFacial when they receive the treatment periodically and on a regular basis. Most of my patients will do three or four facials every year.

Is there a learning curve for providers?

Dr. Durkin: As with any meaningful treatment modality, there is a learning curve, especially concerning the dermabrasion. Because The SaltFacial offers formal dermabrasion treatment, it is imperative that practitioners understand the potency of this platform before they start applying it to patients.

Please share your treatment protocols and any pearls.

Dr. Durkin: This is a minimum 2-hour experience in our practice. It combines a European facial and standard dermabrasion; then the LED therapy; and then a scalp, face, and neck massage. The SaltFacial is the cornerstone treatment totaling 45 minutes. Treat this platform as a patient experience and let the result speak for itself.
