Obagi’s Skintrinsiq System

In each issue, Modern Aesthetics® magazine asks cosmetic physicians about the newest devices that they are introducing to patients. Obagi recently entered the skincare device market with Skintrinsiq, and it’s quickly becoming a workhorse for Ashish C. Bhatia, MD, FAAD, an associate professor of clinical dermatology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago and the director of dermatologic, laser, and cosmetic surgery and medical director for dermatologic research at Oak Dermatology in Naperville, IL. Here, Dr. Bhatia shares his experience with the new device.

What is the Skintrinsiq System, and how are you using it in practice?

Ashish C. Bhatia, MD: The Skintrinsiq device delivers an in-office treatment that uses innovative Obagi InfuseIQ technology to gently lift the upper layers of the skin, opening channels to allow impurities to be extracted and Obagi products to be thoroughly infused. Immediately after the treatment, the channels close so that products are locked in and can continue working after the treatment is over. I am using it in my practice as pre-procedure prep, as part of a skincare routine/regimen, to improve overall skin health, and to maximize the impact of Obagi’s medical-grade skincare.

What sets Skintrinsiq System apart from other in-office facial devices?

Dr. Bhatia: The Skintrinsiq system builds on Obagi’s unique understanding of the skin to deliver a relaxing, spa-like facial experience that provides a dual effect: first it extracts impurities, and then it infuses proven Obagi skincare products via treatment protocols customized for individual skincare needs. I also like that it provides simultaneous blue/red LED light therapy without additional treatment steps that would require more time for the patient or my staff; gently cleanses the skin without harsh dermabrasion leaving the skin feeling more refreshed; and uses innovative pneumatic technology to infuse and lock products into the stratum corneum to continue working long after the immediate treatment is over.

Please share your treatment protocol/s and any pearls.

Dr. Bhatia: I really like the brightening and clarifying protocol that Obagi recommends. The brightening protocol involves infusing Nu-Derm Clear FX and Hydrate Moisturizer and then applying Sun Shield Matte Broad Spectrum SPF post-treatment. I find that this protocol results in a more even and radiant complexion. The clarifying protocol uses the moisturizer and SPF and infuses CLENZIderm MD Pore therapy. This protocol improves oily, blemish-prone skin and reduces the appearance of congested pores. Both protocols provide easy solutions to problems I hear a lot from my patients.

What procedures/products do you pair the Skintrinsic System with?

Dr. Bhatia: I love using it pre-laser treatments and pre-injectable treatments. It’s an ideal way to prep the skin for therapeutic treatments since it not only deeply cleans the skin but gives a booster treatment of the topical products that I recommend for my patients. I pair it with many Obagi Medical products that I recommend for my patients to help jumpstart their treatment and also to maintain the results that my patients desire.

Are patients pleased with the results?

Dr. Bhatia: My patients love it. It’s quick and easy, and they have commented that their skin immediately looks refreshed and they see these results for days after. It’s safe for all skin types and can make everyone’s skin feel clean and refreshed.
