New Toxins
We already have four neuromodulators in our aesthetic toolbox: Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. Soon, we may be seeing at least 2 more, and these newbies may hold advantages over the currently available crew.
After a series of setbacks, Revance Therapeutics has a new action date from the FDA for daxibotulinumtoxinA, a long-acting neuromodulator candidate that’s under review to treat frown lines. FDA is slated to make a decision by September 8. DAXI, as it’s called in shorthand, promises to last for 6 months, compared to Botox’s 3-4 months. It met all primary and secondary endpoints in 2 Phase 3 trials (SAKURA 1 and 2) and demonstrated an impressive 6-month median durability. This should allow patients to be treated twice a year versus 3-4 times a year with currently approved botulinum toxins. That’s a win.
In addition to cosmetic uses, Revance is developing DAXI for cervical dystonia and neuromuscular spasm and spasticity.
Galderma’s investigational relabotulinumtoxinA is a liquid formulation of botulinum toxin A. It improves both glabellar and lateral canthal lines with a rapid onset of action and a long duration of up to 6 months, according to top-line Phase 3 data presented at the Vegas Cosmetic Surgery & Aesthetic Dermatology meeting. The big plus here is the fact that it is liquid, thus avoiding the need to reconstitute from powder and eliminating variability, errors, and risks associated with such reconstitution. This would be expected to improve upon the consistency of results—another win.

Love Handles (Sans Surgery)
Whether you prefer the term flanks, love handles, or muffin tops, the lateral abdomen has been on our most-wanted list for a long time. This area is notoriously hard to treat with available minimally invasive tools, and many patients don’t want to or can’t undergo surgery.
Now they don’t have to. BTL recently launched EmSculpt NEO’s Edge applicator for the lateral abdomen. The EmSculpt NEO delivers both high-intensity, focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy and radiofrequency (RF) technology simultaneously via dual-field applicators to reduce fat and tone muscles in the anterior and posterior flank. This allows patients to reduce fat and enhance musculature in a very important aesthetic area without surgery and downtime. The EmSculpt NEO Edge adds another tool to the options for treatment of these “hippy “ areas.
