In each issue, Modern Aesthetics® magazine taps cosmetic physicians to discuss the newest devices that they are introducing to patients. Here, Jay Calvert, MD, a plastic surgeon with offices in Beverly Hills and Newport Beach, CA, tells us about the HydraFacial Keravive Treatment and how its use promotes a healthy scalp and healthier, fuller-looking hair.

Tell us about the HydraFacial Keravive Treatment?
Jay Calvert, MD: The new HydraFacial Keravive treatment uses HydraFacial’s patented vortex technology and Keravive Peptide Complex Solution to cleanse, exfoliate, and deliver a proprietary blend of biomimetic polypeptides and skin proteins to hydrate and nourish the scalp. Like the original HydraFacial, Keravive is a three-step process. Two of the steps are in office, and one is at home. The three steps are:
- Step 1: Cleanse + Exfoliate (in−office). HydraFacial Vortex Technology extracts dirt, oil, and product residue from the scalp and hair follicles and exfoliates the scalp.
- Step 2: Hydrate + Nourish (in−office). HydraFacial Keravive Peptide Complex Solution nourishes the scalp and hair follicles with a hyper-concentrated blend of biomimetic polypeptides and skin proteins for a healthy scalp and healthier, fuller-looking hair.
- Step 3: Extend + Enhance (at−home). Daily use of the HydraFacial Keravive Peptide Complex Spray, which includes the same biomimetic polypeptides and skin proteins found in the in-office solution, enhances the in-office treatment and delivers daily hydration and nourishment to the scalp and hair follicles.
In my practice, the treatment takes about one hour. My aesthetician performs the treatment. It starts with a five-minute head massage and a 20-minute LightStim Red LED treatment to maximize absorption and stimulate circulation. We recommend that for best results clients come in for an in-office treatment every month.
Who is a good candidate for the HydraFacial Keravive Treatment?
Dr. Calvert: Keravive is good for anyone interested in improving the overall health of their scalp and hair and/or anyone who seeks treatment for hair thinning or hair loss. Keravive is indicated for people who are experiencing scalp flaking, itchiness, or dryness. It also benefits people who are looking to obtain fuller and healthier-looking hair. HydraFacial Keravive treatment and take-home spray also can be used on people with bonded or taped-in hair extensions and/or colored hair.
Can it be used with other hair restoration treatments?
Dr. Calvert: For best results, it is not recommended to administer HydraFacial Keravive and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments in the same visit. The recommended regimen is to alternate between HydraFacial Keravive and PRP treatments and to allow two to four weeks in between treatments. People considering a transplant can do a series of treatments in the three to six months preceding hair transplant surgery to optimize scalp health. Due to the sensitive nature of transplanted hairs, it is not recommended to have a HydraFacial Keravive treatment until six months after the hair transplant. The HydraFacial Keravive take-home spray can be used four weeks after a hair transplant.
At-home LED Light Therapy can be used in conjunction with the HydraFacial Keravive take-home spray. If combining, spray and massage the scalp before using the device.
