Sofwave Promotes Menopause Awareness Month

09/25/2024

September is Menopause Awareness Month, and Sofwave is celebrating by reminding people of how much its technology can help women.

“During menopause, there is a decrease in collagen and elastin production, which causes increased tissue laxity and wrinkles,” board-certified dermatologist Rishi Chopra, MD, MS, FAAD, said in comments provided to Modern Aesthetics. “Sofwave is particularly beneficial for women undergoing menopause who are concerned about skin laxity, wrinkles, and overall skin appearance. Using innovative ultrasound technology, Sofwave is a great choice for those seeking gradual improvements without the commitment of surgical options, and it offers a way to revitalize the skin and boost confidence during this transitional phase.”

Developed to remodel collagen and improve facial lines and wrinkles after just one visit, the FDA-cleared Sofwave treatment relies on a new delivery method of ultrasound technology called SUPERB™ (Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam) to heat the skin to a temperature between 60°C and 70°C, triggering a healing response that kicks collagen production into overdrive, according to a press release. The result, the release added, is smoother, plumper, and all around younger looking skin.

“Sofwave has elevated my ability to help my peri- and post-menopausal patients age beautifully and authentically,” Modern Aesthetics Editorial Board member Doris Day, MD, FAAD, said in the release.

In the US, approximately 6,000 women enter menopause each day and about 50 million women are post-menopausal. Hormonal shifts can cause significant dryness, resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging in the lower part of the face and neck. As estrogen levels drop, so does collagen production; in the first 5 years after menopause, women’s skin loses approximately 30% of its collagen.

“The more estrogen you have, the more collagen you have,” American Academy of Facial Plastic Reconstructive Surgery president Sherard A. Tatum, MD, said in the release. “Collagen is one of the main proteins that gives skin the elastic and supple properties most associated with youth. The dip in estrogen at menopause also accelerates bone loss.”
