Galinde et al conducted a randomized, controlled, double-blinded, intraindividual study involving 11 patients and 22 NLF treatment sites. Each participant received a monophasic filler on one side and a biphasic filler on the other, allowing the investigators to compare both formulations within the same patient.
Monophasic vs Biphasic HA Fillers for Nasolabial Folds
The researchers assessed outcomes at 12, 24, and 36 weeks by the treating investigator, a blinded live evaluator, and the patient. Efficacy was evaluated using the Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS), while aesthetic improvement was measured with the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS). Investigators also assessed patient satisfaction using a 5-grade ad hoc patient-reported outcome measure and pain using a visual analog scale (VAS).
At 12 and 24 weeks, the 2 filler formulations produced similar improvements. By week 36, however, the monophasic filler demonstrated significantly better wrinkle reduction and aesthetic outcomes, along with higher patient satisfaction. VAS scores also indicated significantly less pain with the monophasic formulation.
The study was limited by its small sample of 11 patients, and the abstract did not provide effect sizes, exact P values, adverse-event rates, or specific filler products.
