Results from a small study showed intradermal treatment with low-cross-linked hyaluronic acid (HA) was associated with improvements in periorbital and perioral wrinkles, skin quality, and dermal measurements that persisted through 24 weeks.
Published in Dermatology and Therapy (Heidelberg), the study included 25 participants with facial wrinkles rated 2 or higher on the Wrinkle Severity Rating Scale (WSRS). Participants underwent 3 intradermal microinjection sessions at monthly intervals. Efficacy and safety were evaluated over 24 weeks.
Hyaluronic Acid Microinjections Improve Periorbital and Perioral Wrinkle Scores
At week 24, mean periorbital WSRS scores decreased from 3.06 ± 0.51 at baseline to 1.79 ± 0.45. Mean perioral scores declined from 3.18 ± 0.49 to 2.01 ± 0.46. Periorbital improvement emerged earlier, while changes around the mouth developed more gradually. Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale assessments also favored improvement at 24 weeks, with 81.8% of participants rated as improved by investigators and 86.4% of participants self-rating. Objective assessments revealed changes in elasticity, surface texture, hydration-related measures, and transepidermal water loss. Ultrasound evaluation showed increased dermal thickness and echogenicity. No serious adverse events were observed.
Investigators cited observational design and small sample of 25 participantsas limitations on using the data for comparative efficacy.
“These findings support the potential utility of low-G' hyaluronic acid with favorable cohesivity, low complex viscosity, and high-water affinity as a treatment option for fine wrinkles in thin, highly dynamic facial regions,” the authors concluded.
