Canadian Med Spa Owner Responds to Health Canada Warning Over Unauthorized Treatments

08/12/2024

Christine Francoeur, the owner of MedSkin Laser Center in Alberta, Canada, addressed a recent Health Canada public advisory regarding her med spa. Health Canada issued a warning on August 2 stating unauthorized treatments were being administered by the owner and operator who were allegedly posing as a practitioner at the Sherwood Park med spa.

Francoeur posted on Facebook an image of what appears to be a certification from the British Columbia Academy of Medical Aesthetics & Skin Care for a cosmetic platelet-rich plasma (PRP) training course. A statement attached to the image said:

“In light of recent events, I believe it’s essential to introduce myself to those seeking a clearer understanding of the situation, or who may be quick to judge without knowing the full story… My goal is to share as much information as I can, within the bounds of privacy laws. Over the coming weeks, I intend to offer valuable insights to fellow medspa owners, treatment professionals, and others across Canada. To my clients, friends, and everyone who has offered support through social media or means – thank you. Your encouragement, positivity, and support have given me the strength and determination to face the challenges and judgement I’m currently encountering… In the months ahead, I will be posting daily to highlight crucial aspects of this industry and, at the very least, to raise awareness about the potential risks involved in operating a medspa in the absence of industry regulations.”

The public advisory claims the unauthorized treatments include platelet rich plasma (PRP) for hair restoration, breast enhancements, rejuvenating skin and muscles, wound healing and face lifts. Health Canada says unauthorized PRP treatments could lead to serious health risks, including potential transmission of infectious diseases, contaminants, and toxic effects.

Unauthorized platelet rich fibrin (PRF) for scalp, eyes, acne, face, neck, jaw line, hands, and decolletage, Botulinum toxin, microneedles and microneedle tips, and a plasma pen were also seized.

Patients are urged not to receive unauthorized treatments from MedSkin Laser Center. If you have previously undergone treatment at this facility, you should consult with a licensed practitioner to discuss health concerns.

Health Canada advises to check the status of those presenting themselves as practitioners with the College of Physicians and Surgeons prior to receiving treatment. Any concerns regarding the illegal practice of medicine should be reported to the College of Physicians and Surgeons.
