Botulism-Like Symptoms Linked to Suspected Fake Cosmetic Injections in Illinois

04/09/2024

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has issued a warning to healthcare facilities, particularly hospital ERs, urging heightened vigilance for patients exhibiting symptoms resembling botulism.

The advisory follows the identification of a cluster of two cases in Illinois linked to injections of Botox or potentially counterfeit alternatives in LaSalle County. The agency has also in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding a similar cluster reported by the Tennessee Department of Health.

According to a press release, both individuals affected in Illinois displayed symptoms consistent with botulism, including blurred or double vision, facial drooping, fatigue, and respiratory issues. The patients required hospitalization following injections administered by a licensed nurse in LaSalle County, who the release said was operating beyond her authorized scope of practice.

“Illinois residents should exercise caution when considering cosmetic treatment,” said IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra.  “Receiving these treatments in unlicensed, unapproved settings can put you or your loved ones at serious risk for health problems.  Please only seek cosmetic services under the care of licensed professionals trained to do these procedures and who use FDA approved products.  If you are experiencing any health problems after a recent cosmetic treatment, please contact your healthcare provider immediately for help and assistance.”

In Illinois, the administration of botulinum toxin for cosmetic purposes is restricted to licensed professionals regulated by IDFPR, including physicians, nurses under physician supervision, and certain Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) and Physician Assistants (PAs). Cosmetologists and estheticians are explicitly prohibited from performing such procedures.

IDFPR Secretary, Mario Treto, Jr., underscored the agency's commitment to consumer protection, urging individuals to verify the licensure of professionals through IDFPR's online resources and also to report any suspected violations.

“As the State of Illinois’ head regulatory agency, IDFPR prioritizes protecting consumers and equipping them with the tools they need for safe, informed decision-making,” said Treto in a news release. “We encourage everyone to use the resources on our website to ensure they receive services from trained, licensed professionals, as well as to inform us of the unlawful provision of medical services to maintain the highest quality of care throughout the State of Illinois.”
