The new formulation expands BIOCORNEUM’s scar management portfolio alongside its original SiliShield SPF 30 product. According to the company, Mineral SPF 30 is designed for all skin types, including sensitive skin, and can be used on new and mature scars resulting from surgical procedures, injuries, and burns.
Mineral SPF 30 Combines Scar Management and UV Protection
BIOCORNEUM Mineral SPF 30 is designed to soften and flatten scars while reducing the appearance of redness. The company also positions the product as a way to address UV exposure during scar care.
The formulation creates a silicone layer that moves with intact skin, including areas around joints. The gel is water resistant for 80 minutes and is designed for use alongside daily skin care and cosmetics.
“Sun protection is one of the most important—and most overlooked—parts of scar care,” Maryam Safaee, MD, FAAD, a Los Angeles-based board-certified dermatologist, said in the company announcement. “UV exposure is a major driver of discoloration and prolonged scar visibility, so I've always told patients that their scar treatment is incomplete without daily SPF layered on top.”
Safaee added that incorporating mineral sun protection into the silicone formulation may simplify the routine for patients using scar therapy and sunscreen. The company also said that the gel can help reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation in hypertrophic and keloid scars and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by helping protect skin against dehydration.
