Patient Care Research and Teaching

I am honored to introduce myself as the new Chief Medical Editor of Modern Aesthetics®. Following in the footsteps of my esteemed friend and mentor, Dr. Steve Dayan, and a leader in the field whose work I have long admired, Dr. Heidi Waldorf, I am acutely aware of the significant role this position holds. Dr. Dayan’s and Dr. Waldorf’s contributions have been monumental, and I aim to build upon their legacy with the same dedication and passion.

As the CEO and founder of SOM Aesthetics in Encinitas, California, and a double board-certified cosmetic dermatologist, I have devoted my career to the intersection of innovation, patient care, and education. My journey from Johns Hopkins to Harvard, and ultimately to San Diego, has equipped me with a diverse and rich background in dermatologic surgery, cutaneous immunology, and cosmetic procedures. This extensive experience has shaped my perspective on the future of aesthetic medicine.

My vision for Modern Aesthetics is anchored in three primary pillars: patient care, research, and teaching. These are foundational elements that constitute the House of Medicine. These pillars will guide our collective efforts to advance the field of aesthetic medicine and ensure we remain at the forefront of innovation and excellence.

Firstly, patient care must always be our top priority. In an industry often clouded by marketing hype, it is essential to sift through the noise and uncover the truth behind the treatments we provide. By focusing on patient safety and efficacy, we can deliver the best possible outcomes, free from bias and undue influence from various stakeholders. I am passionate about regenerative aesthetics, which aim to restore form and function using native tissue, reflecting my background in face and extremity tissue transplantation. This holistic approach to aesthetics will be a key focus as we move forward.

Secondly, research is the bedrock of progress. By leveraging insights from clinical trials and embracing disruptive technologies from both industry and academia, we can challenge existing dogmas and deepen our understanding of the “why” behind our practices. My work in cutaneous immunology and clinical trials for injectable fillers, toxins, and energy-based devices has underscored the importance of continuous learning and adaptation. In this role, I will prioritize highlighting emerging technologies and trends that have the potential to transform our field materially.

Lastly, teaching and fostering a community of collaboration are essential for sustained innovation. Modern Aesthetics will serve as a platform to spark curiosity, encourage dialogue, and inspire the next generation of practitioners. By cultivating a collaborative environment, we can collectively elevate our practice and push the boundaries of what is possible in aesthetic medicine.

As we embark on this new chapter, I am committed to ensuring that Modern Aesthetics remains a trusted source of knowledge, insight, and inspiration. Together, we will explore new frontiers, challenge the status quo, and strive for excellence in all that we do. I am optimistic about the future of our field and confident that, with your support and engagement, we will continue to advance and innovate in ways that benefit our patients and our profession.

Thank you for entrusting me with this role. I look forward to working with each of you to shape the future of aesthetic medicine.
