In each issue, Modern Aesthetics® magazine spotlights a new device that cosmetic dermatologists are introducing to their patients. Here, Stacy Marie Chimento, MD, a dermatologist in Miami, FL, shares her experience with Candela’s Matrix Pro, which she uses to treat acne scars, tone, texture, and skin laxity.
What is Candela’s Matrix Pro?
Stacy Marie Chimento, MD: The Matrix System is a multidimensional rejuvenation device that is used to correct, maintain, and restore the skin from deep within to address all signs of aging and damage. This platform allows for complete customization for each patient as everyone’s skin is unique. The Matrix system platform has three different modalities, Sublime (infrared and radiofrequency), Sublative (fractionated bipolar radiofrequency), and the latest treatment option which is Matrix Pro (fractionated radiofrequency microneedling). The Matrix Pro is a US Food and Drug Administration-cleared skin rejuvenation device that delivers short pulse fractional radiofrequency through the use of tiny stainless steel micro-needles. These are the tiniest on the market. It allows for the treatment of three different depths within the skin in one insertion to increase collagen production for natural volumization. It provides a permanent solution for acne scars, tone, texture, pore size, and skin laxity, giving the skin a smoothness that is unlike any other device on the market.

How are you using the Matrix Pro in practice?
Dr. Chimento: The Matrix Pro can be used to treat all skin types safely for acne scars, tone, texture, and skin laxity. As the system allows for customization of the energy and treatment depths, I can tailor the treatments to my patients’ skin types and needs. Anyone can benefit from this treatment as it treats the skin from within. Real rejuvenation requires addressing the framework and the cause of aging which is the loss of collagen and the underlying structural network. The device can even be used off the face to address skin laxity on the neck, chest, arms, knees, and even abdomen. It’s a longer-term solution to anti-aging.
How does the Matrix Pro compare to other RF microneedling devices?
Dr. Chimento: The Matrix Pro has the smallest and highest-grade needles in the market meaning that there is less discomfort for patients. Only one pass is needed, which also decreases patient discomfort. Customization is achievable as the provider can deliver the appropriate depth and energy based on a person’s skin type. It has smart depth technology with impedance monitoring that ensures consistent delivery of energy and results. No other RF device does this.
This can be problematic in areas where we don’t want to disrupt certain structures like subcutaneous fat in the face creating atrophy and a worse appearance. You have the capability to melt fatty tissue if wanted. With Matrix Pro, providers can tell if energy is being delivered and where it is being delivered.
What is your protocol?
Dr. Chimento: I have patients come in my office 40 to 45 minutes early for preparation. Topical numbing cream is applied. After the skin is cleansed, the procedure is performed which can take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. I offer nitrous oxide for additional comfort, although it is often not needed. The patient will leave with a pink or red appearance. There is no downtime associated with this procedure. A patient can resume their normal activities the next day and wear make-up if wanted. Particular care is needed to avoid excessive sun exposure with any energy device and gentle skin care is recommended for a week.
Is there a learning curve?
Dr. Chimento There is a learning curve as far as customizing the depths and energy per patient and manipulating the tissue during the procedure. It is a very safe and effective device and it’s very easy to use.
