Rice Water for Hair Health

Patients used to get their skin and hair care advice from doctors, aestheticians, and hair stylists, but today Tik Tok seems to have their ears (and eyes).

The good news? Not all Tik Tok beauty tips are as hazardous as using Gorilla Glue for hair spray, says Jeanine B. Downie, MD, FAAD, director of image Dermatology PC in Montclair, NJ.

A new trend making the rounds calls for using starchy rice water to improve hair’s strength, texture, and shine and help it grow. “Rice water appears to have merits and benefits,” Dr. Downie says.

Rice water contains hair-healthy nutrients, such as amino acids, antioxidants, minerals, vitamins B and E, and inositol. It’s the inositol that penetrates damaged hair and repairs it from the inside out, she says.

“You spray it in after your shampoo and conditioner and leave it for about 45 minutes,” she says. “One may not leave it in as a conditioner because it can cause a protein buildup on the scalp that can lead to flaking, itching, and scalp irritation.”

Rice water can be used once or twice a week safely, she says. There are several hair care products containing rice water on the market, but you can actually DIY at home and keep it in the refrigerator. Here’s how:

Ingredients:

• 1 cup of rice
• 1 cup of water

Instructions:

• Rinse and strain rice
• Mix the strained rice in a medium-sized bowl with one cup of water until the water becomes cloudy.
• Strain the rice and keep the water in a bowl.
• Put the rice water in a plastic container and cover it. Let it sit at room temperature for 24 hours to ferment
• Next, fill a small container or spray bottle with the rice water. Refrigerate it until you are ready to use it.
