2017 AAD Summer Meeting

Modern Aesthetics® magazine's sister publication Practical Dermatology® and DermTube.com offered video coverage of the 2017 American Academy of Dermatology Summer Meeting, which was held July 27-30 in New York City. Hosted by Seemal R. Desai, a dermatologist in Plano, TX, coverage included discussion of the latest treatments for hair loss and avoiding injection complications when performing minimally invasive procedures.

With proper strategies and protocols in place, it's possible to minimize potential risks associated with minimally invasive procedures, such as needle sticks and vascular occlusion, says Charlene Lam, MD. In avoiding vasculature compromise, one of the most dreaded filler complications, Dr. Lam stresses the importance of understanding the anatomy and having a healthy respect for variations among individual patients. As options for treating and preventing hair loss expand, physicians need to keep up with new advancements, Nicole Rogers, MD says. She discusses growing interest in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments to treat male and female hair loss. She addresses lingering questions about how to help patients regrow hair and current thoughts about best protocols being developed.

Vegas Cosmetic Surgery 2017 was held at Bellagio hotel in early June for what founder and chair Dr. S. Randolph Waldman calls the “biggest and boldest show yet.” Now in its 13th year, the meeting included two continuous surgical sessions, a minimally invasive session, CME in-depth seminars, and sponsored workshops along with a comprehensive practice management and marketing symposium. Many Modern Aesthetics® columnists wowed the crowd during practice management sessions including Wendy Lewis, David Evans, Jay Shorr and Amspa's Alex Thiersch. Other highlights included “Botched” star and Modern Aesthetics® Editorial Board Member Paul Nassif, MD's talk on what it is like to star in your own reality TV show, and Chicago dermatologist Amy Taub, MD's presentation of new data from the Defenage multi-center double blind study.
