In each edition, Modern Aesthetics® asks top aesthetic physicians about the newest cosmeceuticals in their practices. This month, Alexander Rivkin, MD of Westside Aesthetics in Los Angeles, talks about the role of Alastin Skin Care in his practice.

What sets Alastin's approach to skincare apart from other products?

Today's patients “more and more want instant gratification,” observes facial plastic surgeon Alexander Rivkin, MD. That means they want to see meaningful results but with a minimum of downtime and discomfort. With its products formulated to enhance procedure outcomes and support skin health, Alastin is focused on helping patients get the results they want, the way they want, Dr. Rivkin says.

“The Alastin system is a very effective pre-procedure regimen,” according to Dr. Rivkin. It can help to prep the skin by encouraging it to act like younger skin and removing impurities. Post-procedure, the products support skin repair and can help maintain benefits of interventions over time. “The proof is in the recovery,” Dr. Rivkin stresses. “I can promise a patient less downtime, so I can do the procedures I think are best and get the kinds of results I want to get for them…I can make a more intensive procedure more palatable by offering them less downtime.”

Peri-procedureal skincare is not entirely new. How is Alastin different?

While the concepts of pre- and post-procedure care are not new, they continue to gain prominence, Dr. Rivkin says, especially as new, effective formulations emerge. Alastin Skin Nectar was developed with a proprietary TriHex Technology that is intended to signal the dermis to stimulate tropolelastin activity, thus mimicking the body's own mechanism to stimulate elastin synthesis and activate collagen production. The brand offers “Procedure Enhancement Kits” for invasive and non-invasive procedures that contain moisturizers that can be used immediately after procedures. Alastin Skin Nectar is the flagship product, available in the kits and sold separately.

Use of Alastin skincare allows a reduction in the duration and intensity of post-procedural effects, Dr. Rivkin says. In fact, he says he has seen the duration of effects reduced by as much as 25 percent using Alastin, compared to his previously recommended regimen. It's not just the results he's seeing anecdotally. “The science behind it is solid,” Dr. Rivkin maintains. “The science is real.”

How are patients responding to the products?

Dr. Rivkin says patients have been happy with the Alastin products—particularly the nectar—and are pleased with the feel of it on their skin. That's an important consideration for the dispensing physician, he says. “When patients use products that feel good on the skin, that are pleasant to use, then they are more likely to continue to use them over the long term.”

“The nectar in particular is a product that is not just for procedures,” Dr. Rivkin notes. “I believe it is a good thing to use on a daily basis.”
