In each edition, Modern Aesthetics® asks top cosmetic physicians about the newest devices in their practices. This month, Bryan G. Forley, MD, FACS, a New York City plastic surgeon, talks about the Nordlys for the treatment of vascular and pigmented lesions, hair removal, and more.
WHAT IS THE NORDLYS?
The Nordlys is a new light-based treatment system from Ellipse, a privately held company with headquarters in Denmark. The FDA approved Nordlys in July 2015. The device uses Selective Waveband Technology, which incorporates a patented dual-mode filter that delivers only wavelengths beneficial to treatment of the intended chromophores and excludes those wavelengths that mainly heat up water. This results in a more targeted outcome with less pain for the patient. The sub-millisecond pulse, introduced with this system, enables the treatment of smaller targets with shorter pulses. The Ellipse Clinical Intelligence interface supplies an appropriate energy and pulse length setting after parameters such as skin type, suntan, and skin condition are entered. The expert mode allows the provider to adapt these settings as needed once he or she has gained clinical experience.

HOW ARE YOU USING THE DEVICE IN YOUR PRACTICE?
The Nordyls is a multi-platform hybrid device that allows me to treat multiple conditions. I am using it to treat a broad range of frequently encountered vascular and skin pigmentation disorders such as solar lentigines, melasma, telangiectasias, rosacea, and leg veins as well as unwanted body hair, acne, scars, and onychomycosis. Vascular malformations such as port wine stains, venous lakes, and hemangiomas can also be successfully treated.
Specifically, the sub-millisecond pulse allows me to treat lesions that I couldn't in the past including super thin telangiectasias and pink port wine stains.
HOW ARE PATIENTS RESPONDING TO TREATMENT WITH THIS DEVICE?
Nordlys provides a winning combination of comfortable treatments that are both safe and effective, which has resulted in broad patient acceptance. My practice has expanded our capacity to offer solutions for very common conditions that I see on a daily basis. It has enabled me to realize my goal of providing a more comprehensive treatment experience for both my surgical and non-surgical patients. A large majority of my patients, in all age groups, are candidates for one or more treatment options made possible with this single device. As such, patients become willing ambassadors to help grow the practice making a quick return on investment possible.
