It's All About the Lady Parts

Non-invasive vaginal rejuvenation is hot, literally and figuratively. Heat (laser or radiofrequency) is delivered intra-vaginally and externally to improve looks and function. It's not just about low genital self-esteem as visions of female genitalia now permeate modern culture both on the Internet as well as TV and movies. Many women still want the external labia to be tightened and more youthful. However, other issues can be addressed with this technology including mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence, vaginal dryness and laxity, and sexual or orgasmic dysfunction. The vaginal mucosa thickens and tightens, resulting in improved lubrication, as well as increased blood flow to the labia and clitoris, which can also increase orgasm potential.

Current devices available in the marketplace are Mona Lisa Touch™ (Cynosure), a CO2 based laser system; FemiLift™ (Alma), a fractionated CO2 laser; IntimaLase™ (Fotona), an Erbium:YAG laser; and ThermiVa™ (Thermi), an RF contact device. Several more products will soon be entering this space as well. All of these treatments appear to be safe, well tolerated, and yield almost immediate results. Most require one to three treatments, do not require local anesthesia (the treatments are relatively painless), have almost no downtime, and external results can often be seen at the conclusion of the procedure.

While many women have been hesitant to ask about the genital area, the discussion just got a whole lot easier.

Affordable Drug Prices

In November, a Senate committee initiated an investigation into multiple drug makers' escalating drug pricing. The committee has requested a meeting with the CEO of Turing Pharmaceuticals regarding the increase in price of an anti-infection drug by more than 5,000 percent: That's right, more than 5,000 percent. The Chief of Valeant Pharmaceuticals has also been summoned and documents subpoenaed about price gouging and general business strategy. These companies are not alone as this multi-billion dollar industry continues to spiral out of control. A study recently published in the November edition of JAMA Dermatology (Rosenberg and Rosenberg) notes that retail pricing of 19 brand name dermatology drugs have increased by an average of five times their cost from 2009 to 2014.

Where this is going, nobody knows.
