In each issue, Modern Aesthetics® magazine spotlights a new device that cosmetic dermatologists are introducing to their patients. Here, Suneel Chilukuri, MD, a cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon in Houston, shares his experience with Advalight’s ADVATx laser.

Dr. Chilukuri: We use the ADVATx dual wavelength 589/1319 nm laser (ADVATx) from Advalight. While we have 51 energy-based devices at our practice, we find the biggest difference is probably patient experience. In the past, we used pulsed dye laser (PDL) to reduce erythema, telangectasias, and other blood vessels. Unfortunately, the PDL would cause significant edema and moderate pain when treating a full face. With the ADVATx, there is minimal-to-no discomfort and no perceptible edema. It provides medical-grade outcomes with a spa-like treatment for the patient.

Can you share your experience using the ADVATx in your practice and the types of conditions you find it treats most effectively?

The versatility and efficacy of the ADVATx sets it apart, with over 20 cleared indications. There’s a lot it does well, and we primarily use it in our practice for vascular conditions such as rosacea and telangiectasias, acne, melasma, and scars (surgical, traumatic, and acne).

How does the ADVATx contribute to improved patient outcomes and satisfaction with aesthetic procedures?

As a standalone, the ADVATx delivers consistent, on-the-table results with no social downtime. No numbing is required, and there is typically no discomfort for the patient.

Can you discuss any notable patient cases or success stories achieved?

We have innumerable success stories. One of the most recent is a 55-year-old attorney who suffers from baseline erythema and flushing. He felt that his “bad genes” were preventing him from partnership as his colleagues would often comment on his redness and assume he was a heavy drinker. After two painless sessions with ADVATx, the patient presented to our office with restored confidence, noting that he was being considered for partnership.

What advice do you have for other practitioners considering incorporating the ADVATx laser into their practice?

For any physician or non-physician practice owner, I always recommend they first determine the most common conditions for which their patients seek treatment. In the last 20-plus years, most of our patients ask about redness and brown discoloration. The ADVATx allows us to safely treat both of those conditions effectively with no downtime. We consider the ADVATx to be one of our foundation technologies as we can do so much with it, safely and effectively on all skin types. It’s wonderful as a stand-alone treatment but also plays well with so many other modalities that we can stack it with other same-day treatments and give the patient immediate long-term gratification with even better outcomes.
