Sun-Cream Contouring: A Shady New TikTok Trend

TikTokers are obsessed with sun-cream contouring or applying sunscreen to the face, but not the jawline and cheeks, for a semi-permanent contour.

“Thumbs down to this TikTok trend,” says Jeanine B. Downie, MD, FAAD, director of image Dermatology PC in Montclair, NJ. “Wearing sunblock (SPF 30 or higher daily with reapplication regardless of your ethnicity) on the rest of your face and not applying it to your cheeks and your jawline is a terrible idea. This does not work and may predispose you to skin cancer, unwanted freckles, and dark patches/melasma.”

It doesn’t look great either, she says. “The irregular and unusual shading will make you look like people after they are skiing where they have the light area around their eyes and then the rest of their face is dark,” she says. In other words: “unnatural and completely uneven.”

Instead, “I recommend that people interested in contouring their faces buy oil-free makeup and apply the makeup properly.”
