However, the category of patients with “sensitive skin” has always presented a skincare concern for physicians. There is no official “definition” of sensitive skin, but those patients who have it may experience very strong reactions to topical products. As such, they may avoid skincare altogether or stick to products that have lower potential for irritation—even if they also don’t provide much benefit, either.
Convincing patients with sensitive skin to embrace a new topical skincare product, let alone a regimen, can be especially challenging.
Enter the recent study led by Dr. Barbarino and discussed here (J Cosmet Dermatol. 2022;00:1–9.). She and her peers assessed the benefits of a comprehensive integrated skincare program for a group of patients well known to have sensitive skin: those with rosacea. They found that the selection of appropriate products can have benefits for the appearance of the skin immediately after IPL treatment and for months to come.
Importantly, the patients in this study were able to adopt a regimen that elevated skin hydration, reduced the appearance of redness, and improved the appearance of the skin without causing irritation. What are key features of the Phyto Corrective Masque and Gel? What are key features of Resveratrol BE?
Sheila Barbarino, MD: I love the Phyto Corrective Masque for post-procedure because it a soothing mask that immediately brings the skin temperature down. Most of the devices that we use confer their effects by heating up the skin, which, as a consequence, increases inflammation. The Phyto Corrective Masque immediately brings down the skin surface temperature by up to five degrees. This can be important for all patients after device-based treatments, but especially those with sensitive skin.
Both the Phyto Corrective Masque and the Phyto Corrective Gel contain a soothing phyto-botanical blend that has been shown to be very well tolerated by patients with sensitive skin. These products soothe, calm, and hydrate the skin. Patients with sensitive skin, including those with rosacea, may have a tendency to avoid topical skincare, which can make them prone to skin dryness. A soothing, moisturizing topical formulation, such as Phyto Corrective Gel, can increase hydration to improve the appearance of the skin; increased hydration makes the skin feel better.
Resveratrol BE contains 1% resveratrol , a ppwerhouse antioxidant. Applied at nighttime, it works while you sleep to help calm the skin. It also contains baicalin 0.5% and vitamin E 1%, an antioxidant that can help reduce lipid peroxidation.
What was the rationale for looking at these products post-IPL, specifically in patients with sensitive skin? What did you find?
Dr. Barbarino: IPL is the gold standard for treating rosacea, which is considered a sensitive skin condition and is characterized by significant inflammation. IPL treatment leads to significant swelling post-procedure.
I wanted to specifically assess the benefit of the Phyto Corrective Masque to help cool and calm the skin post-IPL. I also wanted to confirm the long-term benefit of daily use of Phyto Corrective Gel and Resveratrol BE for these patients with sensitive skin.
For the study, 10 subjects with rosacea had IPL treatment on both sides of the face. To the right side of the face only, they applied Phyto Corrective Masque once weekly starting immediately after IPL; Phyto Corrective Gel twice daily; and Resveratrol BE at night. Subjects applied sunscreen to both sides of the face.
I usually recommend a series of 3 IPL treatments for a patient with rosacea. However, the use of this skincare regimen following a single IPL treatment was associated with a significant improvement in the appearance of the skin that lasted for 3 months.
On Day 1 after IPL, all subjects reported less redness, improved hydration, and improved skin appearance on the right side of the face. In all, 90% of subjects said that redness was improved at Day 1 (30% significantly improved, 60% improved).
Would you recommend these products in conjunction with other energy-based procedures or for use by rosacea patients generally?
Dr. Barbarino: This was an integrated skincare study, which is when you combine a treatment along with skincare to get the maximum outcome for your patients. Based on these results, I use this regimen with all my rosacea patients who undergo IPL.
I prefer that patients intending to undergo IPL be on this regimen.
I would consider these products after any energy-based device procedure for most patients.
People with sensitive skin know who they are. They are wary of any new skincare products. They are worried about any new laser, any treatment on their skin because they’ve reacted to many things in the past. Anyone that has sensitive skin may consider these Phyto Corrective products as an option.
One challenge today is that the market is flooded with skincare products. I think the general public has come to believe that, in order to have an effect, a product has to leave them broken out, dry, red, scaly, or flaky. On the contrary, these products are soothing the skin to help the skin look its best.
I think that it’s important to recognize that with this regimen we reduced downtime typically associated with the treatment that rosacea sufferers should be getting to keep their condition under control. And we helped maintain healthy-looking skin over several months, which is a huge benefit for this group of patients with a chronic skin concern.
