In each issue, Modern Aesthetics® magazine asks top cosmetic doctors about the newest devices that they are introducing to patients. Here, Bruce Katz, MD, Director of Juva Skin & Laser Center in New York City, shares his experience with Glacial Rx, a new first-in-category cryomodulation aesthetic device.
What is Glacial Rx, and how are you using it in practice?
Dr. Katz: This device uses a brand-new type of energy source called cryomodulation that treats pigmentation, inflammation, and redness without any downtime. It temporarily impairs melanin transfer from the melanocytes to the keratinocytes, the root cause of age spots. Glacial Rx is the first FDA-approved dermatologic use of controlled contact cooling to treat dark spots as well as inflammation in the skin. I am really excited about Glacial Rx, because the cooling technology not only clears up congestion and skin dullness immediately but in the weeks following a treatment, it also improves the appearance of skin conditions, such as age spots, and addresses redness or inflammation. I use it to treat the face, but it can be used for pigmented lesions in patients with rosacea to reduce redness and inflammation including that caused by eczema and psoriasis.
What sets Glacial Rx apart from other in-office facial treatments?
Dr. Katz: This is an all-new, first-in-class device. It was developed by the same scientists who invented CoolSculpting. It goes deeper than typical cold therapies without causing damage. Glacial Rx feels like having a facial but has long-lasting clinically proven results.
How well does Glacial Rx work?
Dr. Katz: According to studies, physicians saw an improvement in 92 percent of patients at one-month follow-up, and many patients continued to see improvement at three-month follow-up. Pigment lightens over time. We think this is the result of a slow programmed death of the cells.
Tell us about the patient experience with Glacial Rx.
Dr. Katz: The device uses controlled cold temperatures to cool skin. It is very soothing and has no downtime. People find it relaxing and calming. Treatment time is about five to 10 minutes to treat discrete lesions, and the all-over-cooling treatment takes 30 to 40 minutes. It can be used on all skin types.
